Depending on their age and interest, students either will have
    -- no casting conversation
-- a casting conversation by phone
    -- an audition by phone

Please read the following description to see which group your student is in. If they are having a casting conversation or audition, please consult the open times below and email us with your top three choices for timeslots. We will get back to you with a confirmation or, if all three slots had filled when we received your request, we will ask you to choose three more.

Based on their age and interest, students fall into one of the three groups below. Please determine which one is a fit for your child, and if needed, send us your preferred times for a casting conversation or audition.

1)  NO NEED FOR A CASTING CONVERSATION OR AUDITION:
---  students aged 8-9 OR students aged 10-14 who do not want to be considered for any individual parts with more than ~4 lines:

Students aged 8-9 play in group parts, and occasionally are given small individual parts. Students 10-14 who also prefer this level of activity in the play need not have a casting conversation or audition.

2)  CASTING CONVERSATION BY PHONE:
--- students aged 10-11 who wish to be considered for an individual role with more than 5 lines
--- students aged 10-11 who would like to be considered for a lead role in the pocket show Princess and the Pauper
--- students aged 12-14 who would like to be considered for small-medium individual roles in Midsummer Night's Dream [but not any of the eight lead roles]

Any students aged 10-14 (and ones who are 9 and feeling adventurous) who wish may sign up for a casting conversation. Here, we have a ~5-10 minute check-in with the student to see what types of roles they are interested in (big/medium/small, solo singing or no, gender preferences if any, etc.).  As a reminder, if a student 8-14 is opting for group roles or smaller individual roles, they needn't have the casting conversation. Students aged 8 - 9 are cast in group roles and occasionally small individual parts.
Students aged 10-11 interested in a lead role in The Princess and the Pauper that has solo singing (Rachel, Rose, Mother, or King Henry) please prepare a ~30 second song to be sung over the phone. Any song is fine, though it should reflect the student's range.

3)  AUDITIONS:
--- students aged 12-14 (with the occasional spunky 11-year old) interested in being considered for one of the 8 larger roles in A Midsummer Night's Dream

Hermia*, Helena*, Lysander*, Demetrius*, Oberon, Titania, Puck*, Bottom*

    * might be double-cast, with two students on stage at the same time playing the role.

Students aged 12-14 (and those aged 11 who feel exceptionally advanced in musical theater) who are interested in being considered for these eight largest parts in the play (which might be split up) need to have an audition in person; see dates and times below.   Auditions consist of

  • The student singing a song (30-60 seconds). Any song choice is fine, but it would be best for it to reflect their talent and range of expression and vocal pitch. A cappella is fine, but if a student has recorded back-up music that is fine as well. There will be a piano available at auditions but we will not have a pianist present.
  • The student preparing a short monologue. Monologues can be from any source material, should be 20-45 seconds long, and ideally memorized.
  • The student and I having a ~5 minute conversation about the students' interests in the various characters, any gender preferences in casting, etc.
  • A singing range test from their lowest to highest

How do we sign up?

Please email directortorsti@rovainenmusicals.com with your top three (3) time preferences, in order, and the best phone number at which to call your child that day, even if you think we have it. We will schedule your child accordingly and send you a confirmation email with the time we will be doing.

This schedule will be updated once a day.

Please try to find a time among those listed here. If for some reason it is impossible to find a compatible phone time with one listed here (and we are not using the term 'impossible' lightly), send us a line so we can try to find an alternate time.

Times listed are Eastern Standard Time.
